Roll it flat then refrigerate

Put plastic wrap on top of the slab of butter and roll it flat. It helps if the butter is cold but slightly softened from the refrigerator. Don't try to go too fast or it will make a mess. Try to keep the slab in roughly a square shape with an even thickness. Make sure all the individual pieces of butter have fused together tightly by the end.
